2010-11-01 - November is National Diabetes Awareness month. Learn about the benefits of keeping diabetes in control.

Do you or a loved one have diabetes? Diabetes affects approximately 23.8 million adults and children in the United States and is a disorder in which blood sugar (glucose) levels are abnormally high.

In persons with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to regulate elevated blood sugars in the body. For people with type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces insulin, but the body builds an insulin resistance resulting in high blood sugars.

Symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst, weight loss, blurred vision and drowsiness. If you think you have diabetes, Prospect Medical urges you to contact your PCP to schedule an appointment. Long-term complications include heart attacks, strokes, kidney failures, vision problems and other potential health concerns.

Prospect Medical offers a free class to help diabetics and their family members learn about the causes, treatment and management of diabetes in both English and Spanish. To register for a diabetes class, please call us at 714.796.5730 to make a reservation.
